Alexis & Dezmond | Playa del Carmen Destination Wedding
These high school sweethearts knew that the best for them was a Playa del Carmen destination wedding. That way they could have vacation, wedding and honeymoon, all in the same place! They have beautiful hearts and amazing values, but keep reading to find out how he proposed and all about their wedding day story!
“Alexis: I grew up in Texas my entire life. My parents kept me in church and instilled in me values I still follow today. For instance, my parents taught me the importance of giving back and volunteering. During the holidays especially, my family makes it point to volunteer at church, in shelters, really wherever we are needed.
Dez: I grew up in Colfax, Louisiana. It is a very small and rural town in Central Louisiana. The value of outreach and resourcefulness were key. Responding to cries for help by lending time and/or resources was easy to do. My grandparents made it a habit to give those resources before they were even requested. Their anticipation to chose to help others is what I learned to be outreach. My parents both made certain that I learned how to be resourceful. Even though they did not always see eye to eye, they both made sure I learned the importance of be self-reliant and resourceful in every aspect of my life.”
Perform A Proposal
“We met our junior year of high school and became really close friends. During our senior year of high school, we started dating.
Alexis: Dezmond and I love poetry. So, he set up a spoken word event for one of the organizations he was a part of at the time. Food and drinks were set up in the back. For the event, he had my favorite student acapella group perform. He also gave different people the opportunity perform their pieces as well. At the end, Dez performed one of his spoken word pieces and ended by asking me to marry him.
Dezmond: My proposal story was very eventful. I proposed in college at an event cosponsored by an organization where I was a part of the leadership board. So not only did I have to make sure I was prepared for this event, I also had to remain calm to keep the proposal from my then girlfriend. It was a very busy day. The event was spoken word poetry themed, so there were many performers who wanted to share their craft. Only a few people knew what I was doing. I set the event up where I would be the last performer, sort of like the headliner. Finally when it came to my performance I can honestly say I did not account for the large amount of pressure I put on myself. I was definitely nervous. It was funny because I memorized my spoken word piece but completely forgot all my lines. Luckily I had the poems near by, so I was able get through it. Was it pretty? Ugh probably not. Was it smooth? Well, minus me stuttering on every other word. Sort of. Did I get the job done? You know I did!”
It Was A Blast
“We chose a destination wedding because we didn’t want to be traditional. We hadn’t been on an extended vacation for a long time and we thought this would be a great way to combine a vacation, wedding, and honeymoon. Our favorite part of the day was the reception! It was so beautiful. We had a blast.”
Time To Meet Everyone
“Everyone at our Playa del Carmen destination wedding was special. It was the first time alot of our family and friends met. To have our high school friends meet our college friends and our extended family meet each our family friends was beautiful.
Dez: Alexis’ dad created a great video that told our love story from high school to now. Everyone knew we’ve been together since high school, but they hadn’t seen some of the pictures he showed.”
“We love your staff! They are truly amazing. They gave us more than we could’ve ever imagined. Everyone loves your photos. Our favorite picture was a close up of us at the reception. I’m holding Alexis but looking somewhere else, the sun is in the background, and Alexis is looking directly in the camera.”
Valentin Imperial Maya Wedding
“The entire Valentin Maya resort staff was amazing! Our family and friends couldn’t stop saying how accommodating the staff was.
Dez: Amazing, Beautiful, and Surreal.”
Choosing A Playa del Carmen Destination Wedding
“It was nerve wracking trying to make selections that you couldn’t see in person. You’re never sure what all you need to select. Plus, you always have to mindful of your budget. Destination weddings are definitely not cheap. But, ultimately, it was worth it. Everything turned out perfect! Plus, it didn’t rain! Our advice: Make decisions early! Don’t wait until the last minute (two weeks before) to make decisions. You want to be stress free while at the resort.”
Believe In The Value Of Details
“My bouquet was handmade and made completely of brooches. My dress was also my mom’s original wedding dress from 26 years ago. Our wedding song was Believe by Brian Courtney Wilson. We absolutely love this song because it was a perfect representation of us and our day.”
Alexis & Dezmond, you are a beautiful couple, inside and out. Thank you for inspiring us with your Playa del Carmen destination wedding. May your life together be blessed with joy and love.
